The Importance of Exercise While in Quarantine

Attempting to maintain some level of normalcy is where you might find yourself these days. Between helping the kids with their online schooling to taking that Zoom conference call from the quiet of the laundry room, everything seems a bit hectic and crazy right now. However, you shouldn’t feel alone when it comes to finding activities that feel normal and help you to start your day on the right foot. For some, this could be that regular cup of coffee in the mornings, while for others it’s a 20-minute journaling session.

One of the best ways to begin your day is with exercise. Whether you enjoy a quiet morning jog or yoga with your kids, there are countless ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. No matter what your reasons are for exercising while in quarantine, doing so can help you keep your sanity and make you feel good – and here’s why!

Gets the Blood Flowing

Working from home (or not…whatever) and keeping your sanity can feel like a chore right now, which is all the more reason to get your blood pumping and your heart rate up. Breaking a sweat encourages your brain to release endorphins, and endorphins are a natural mood booster. If you’re looking for a way to shake off that quarantine funk, then get up and start moving.

Moving your body at least 30 minutes a day can increase your heart rate, increase oxygen levels in your blood, and boost your mood all at the same time. If you’re not sure where to start, try some online exercise tutorials or scroll through those Instagram accounts you’ve saved for “when I have time.” Getting up off the couch or away from your work can help you clear your head and stay healthy while practicing social distancing.

You’ll Feel Accomplished

Right now, you might feel like your to-do list is a mile long and that you just can’t get a grip on the loads of laundry with everyone at home. Finding 30 to 60 minutes in your day to exercise while in quarantine can help you feel accomplished. If nothing else gets done during the day, you can rest easy knowing you took care of yourself.

Instead of waiting until the end of the day to exercise, try getting it done first thing in the morning. Not only will you feel as if you’ve already accomplished something, you’ll get it out of the way early, leaving more time for the other things you have on your to-do list. Getting your heart pumping and your muscles loosened up first thing in the morning can also leave you feeling more focused and ready to handle whatever the day throws your way.

Where to Exercise

If you’re accustomed to going to the gym on a daily basis, you’ll need to get creative when it comes to exercising during quarantine. If you relish in being outside for a jog with the dog or want to start a new HIIT routine, try some of your local parks or neighborhood trails for a change of scenery. However, be sure to check whether parks in your area are still open to the public.

If all else fails, grab your tennis shoes and yoga mat and head for an empty spot in the backyard. The fresh air will do you some good and help alleviate that cabin fever.
